While the report indicates children are heavier and taller than the previous generation, there is a concern it's not a healthy development. Many of these children are classified as being overweight and even obese, due to many factors including a lack of exercise and an unhealthy diet. How serious is this issue and how are authorities dealing with it.

"Cannot even see his blood vessel, cannot find it. Oh, here it is! Great, stay still. Okay, we got the blood," said a nurse.

It happens almost every time Zhuge goes to hospital. Only thirteen years of age, he weights more than 280 pounds or 125 kilograms  For him, each body check is a battle.

"Come on! Come on!"

"Mom, wait for me!"

"There's only 2 steps left, go go!"

"Great, we made it!"

Doctors say Zhuge has a weak pulse because of his weight. But his size could also lead to other diseases.

"Child obesity could affect the functions of the heart and the lungs, and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. On the other hand, obesity could increase the chances of diabetes," said Zhong Xing, Doctor of the 2nd Hospital of Anhui Medical Univ..

Authorities say the obesity rate among children under 7 years in China rose from 3 percent at the beginning of this century, to 9 percent last year.

And a national report issued on Wednesday shows the average weight of children aged six and seven has increased by more than 4 kilograms since the 1970s

Many worried parents are now looking to weight-reducing medicines. But doctors warn that the improper use of these could have serious side-effects.

"My suggestions for losing weight is diet control and proper exercise. For exercise, 3 to 6 times a week is recommended. And no less than 30 minutes, about an hour each time, or it will not be effective," said Zhong.

The Health and Family Planning Commission also released a new dietary guideline in May, emphasizing the importance of a balanced diet.

As livelihoods improve, and options for "convenient food" have never been better, finding a balance is becoming ever more important.
