Islamic State released a video showing the destruction of a 3,000 year old temple in Iraq.
The United Nations confirmed in a statement on Wednesday evening that satellite imagery showed "extensive damage to the main entrance" of the temple of Nabu, located in the Assyrian city of Nimrud. Nabu is known as the god of wisdom, science and the arts. The temple also houses a number of idolatry statues. Nimrud is located 30 kilometers south of the modern city of Mosul.
The date the video was shot was unclear. The release comes as the Iraqi army and Kurdish Peshmerga forces are preparing an offensive to retake Mosul with support from the US-led coalition.
