The Dragon Boat Festival is also celebrated throughout the region, and is one of the three most important festivals in Taiwan. Lugang, is one of the three oldest trading ports on the island, and locals have been celebrating the occasion with their own special traditions for more than 2,000 years.
Locals wait in a long queue to step over these seven clay pots of fire. The ritual is believed to drive away evil spirits that can cause various diseases thought to be prevalent during this time, which is the most humid time of the year. Special cooked street snacks are a must. For the festival, the choice is the pancake Jiandui".
It's treated as a symbol of the earth that can patch up the sky in order to stop heavy rains destroying a good harvest. Now, "Jian-dui" are offered free outside the local temple for visitors on this special day -- the Dragon Boat Festival.
