As the sun set in Jerusalem on Monday, prayers rang out from the Al-Aqsa Mosque to indicate the end of the first day of fasting in the month of Ramadan.
Thousands of Muslims gathered for Tarawih, a special evening prayer service held during Ramadan. During this month, Muslims refrain from eating, drinking and smoking during daylight hours, and break the fast with a festive meal after sundown. Ramadan takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic Lunar calendar, and starts when the new crescent moon is sighted.
