An arts festival in Germany that is taking a rather unusual approach to the contents of its gallery. Everything from bathrooms to bedrooms and even unanswered emails are on show at the Berlin Biennale Arts Festival which aims to explore the fine lines between design, fashion, economics and art.
Here at the Berlin Biennale Art Festival it seems literally anything can be art.
One installation, from artist Shawn Maximo, consists of a restroom, complete with a functioning toilet, a sink and - confusingly - beanbags.
"I'm trained as an architect and toilets are always the last space to be considered, and they're often designed by the most junior design team member. And I always think that the bathroom is really a missed opportunity for design and experience. And I take that as a challenge, I guess, to try to reinvent how we consider these spaces and what we do in them, and how we also perceive ourselves in these spaces," said Shawn Maximo artist.
The restroom isn't just for observational purposes and can be used for it's full purpose, if really necessary. Maximo truly believes that his design goes beyond what people may perceive his creation represents.
"For me, I think art and design are very much entwined. Especially in today's economies of art presentations. I think that the two worlds are so pourous and kind of cross-fertilising, that I think it's ever more difficult to distinguish between them. And I actually think that the distinction is not so relevant," he said.
London-based Christopher Thomas normally works in photography and sculptures but for the Berlin Biennale he's decided to showcase his talents with a different concept which hovers somewhere between economics, politics and perhaps art.
"This is a long-term artwork, in the form of a startup called 'New Eelam', which is a company that my colleagues and I are founding. In order to provide a flexible, global, housing subscription," said Christopher Thomas artist.
This festival first took place in 1998, inspired by the Venice Biennale. Each festival is curated by a different artist or artist collective.
This year the festival is mostly taking place at two venues; the Kunst-Werke exhibition space and the academy of Art in central Berlin.
It will open to the public from the 4th to the 18th of June.
