We head to the courtroom where Lionel Messi's trial for alleged tax evasion got underway on Tuesday. The 28-year-old is the latest Barcelona star to come to the public's attention for implications of financial wrong-doing after Neymar and Javier Macherano were both summoned earlier this year with the latter being found guilty and receiving a one-year suspended sentence.

According to Spanish tax authorities Jorge Horacio Messi, the forward's father and the man who organises his finances, has concealed 4.1 million Euros earned in image rights through tax havens in Belize and Uruguay from 2007 to 2009. The trial is expected to last for 3 days with Messi set to testify on Thursday. Despite the implications being heavily focused on the father, authorities are arguing his son was complicit and fully aware of his activities.

The Barcelona man was also named in the recent 'Panama Papers' scandal where it was revealed a number of high profile figures were hiding huge amounts of wealth in offshore accounts but no charges were raised. The pair deny any wrong-doing and if round guilty they could face up to 2 years in prison.
