Maria Sharapova has been selected for the Russian Olympic team despite her current suspension for failing a drug test. In March, the 29-year-old tested positive for meldonium, a drug outlawed by WADA in January.
The Russian athletics team are waiting to hear about the possibility of their inclusion in Brazil after a wide-spread doping scandal has engulfed their federation.
All teams have to be submitted by June 6th which is before Sharapova receives her punishment for the offence. Russia's Olympic selection committee have stated they will send their 5th highest ranked player if she is not allowed to compete.
The Russian athletics program will learn from the IAAF this week whether they will be able to take part in this summers games after a state-sponsored doping program amidst mass corruption in their athletics set up was revealed. It included medal winners from the previous two Olympics in London and Beijing.
