After the G7 summit, US President Barack Obama arrived in the Japanese city of Hiroshima and started his historic visit to the Peace Memorial Park in city downtown. He laid a wreath at the cenotaph for vicitms of the atomic bombing.
The visit makes Barack Obama the first sitting US president to visit the site where the US dropped an atomic bomb on August 6, 1945, killing an estimated 140,000 people in the final days of the second World War.
Obama was shown the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, nicknamed the A-Bomb Dome, which is the skeletal remains of the former Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall. This is the building that was closest to the hypocenter of the nuclear bomb but nevertheless remained partially standing.
