The spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council said that adherence to the "One China" policy is fundamental to maintaining the current relations between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan.
The remarks came after the new Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen chose to be ambiguous over this fundamental issue, despite cross-Straits relations being of utmost concern to people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
"The identification and status of Taiwan's representative office in the US and the head of that office is very clear. We strongly oppose any action to create 'two Chinas', 'one China, one Taiwan' or 'Taiwan Independence',"
"All achievements between the two sides are made upon the fundamental 1992 Consensus. Upholding the One China principle is the only way to ensure that the achievements of insititutionalized contact between the two sides will not be affected," said Ma Xiaoguang, spokesperson of Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council PRC.
