East China's Hangzhou city is busy preparing to host the 2016 G20 summit in early September.

World leaders including Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Barack Obama will attend this year's meetings on September 4th and 5th.

Zhang Hongming, mayor of the host city, says Hangzhou has made every effort to ensure that everything is ready by the end of June.

"Since last year, we have stepped up construction in infrastructure, including multiple subway lines and expressways. Great efforts were made to improve the environment in key areas. Specifically, we are going ahead with a broad network of highways and expressways between the city and its surrounding counties, which is already in shape. By the end of June, we will be giving the city an overall face-lift."

The remarks come as the city government launched a 100-day countdown to this year's Summit and over 6-thousand volunteers have signed up to help provide services.

Best-known perhaps for its scenic West Lake, the mayor says Hangzhou is now aiming to build itself into a model innovative city.

"Last year, business start-ups and newly registered capital in the city grew 17.6 percent and 56.9 percent respectively. For 11 consecutive years, Hangzhou has led all provincial capital cities in terms of new patents for invention: The number of invention patents last year totaled 8,200 pieces, up 49.4 percent from the level a year earlier."

Hangzhou, a centuries-old city with a population of nearly 8.9 million, is the capital and largest city of Zhejiang Province.

Home to e-commerce giant Alibaba Group, it has emerged as an important e-commerce hub and now houses the country's first cross-border e-commerce pilot zone.

Online sales revenue in the Hangzhou pilot zone snowballed to 3.46 billion U.S. dollars last year, up from a mere 20 million when it was launched in 2014.
