United States Secretary of State John Kerry has met Aung San Suu Kyi to show support for Myanmar's reforms and political transition.

Kerry's visit to Myanmar comes days after Washington lifted a host of economic sanctions in reward for the nation's reforms. This is also Washington's first high-level talks with Myanmar's new civilian government, ending half a century of military domination in the country.

Suu Kyi is Myanmar's foreign minister, and also holds the newly-created position of state counsellor, as the constitution bars her from presidency. That role is now held by her longtime ally Htin Kyaw. Kerry is also expected to meet army chief Min Aung Hlaing, as Washington looks to further reforms from the military.
