Demonstrators have gathered near where Tsai Ing-wen was inaugurated to appeal to her to recognize the 1992 Consensus.
The demonstrators included representatives from some of the island's organizations. Chang An-lo, president of the China Unionist Party, said the essence of the 1992 Consensus is that both sides of the Straits belong to one China. Chang called on Tsai and the Democratic Progressive Party to shed their elusive approach to the 1992 Consensus, and to change their stance on "Taiwan independence". He also asked them to refrain from creating confrontation that may endanger the people of Taiwan.
Some other participants expressed concern that cross-Straits exchanges and cooperation might suffer and Taiwan's economy be affected. They also feared that the DPP might use the education and culture sectors to promote "implicit Taiwan independence," which they say could have an adverse effect on Taiwan's younger generations.
