The Italian coast guard has rescued more than 1,000 migrants from unsafe boats over the past few days. The migrants were from at least 11 separate vessels.

The International Organization for Migration said more than 1,200 migrants arrived in Italy this week. About 800,000 migrants are still waiting to cross the seas from countries such as Libya, Egypt and Tunisia.
