An EgyptAir passenger jet heading from Paris to Cairo has disappeared from radar. According to the airline, the aircraft's flight number is M-S 8-0-4. The plane was carrying 56 passengers and 10 crew members.
Officials with the airline and the Egyptian civil aviation department say they believe the Airbus A320 probably crashed into the sea. Aboard the flight were 30 Egyptians, 15 French nationals, one Briton and one Belgian.
The plane departed from Paris Charles de Gaulle airport 23.09 Central European Summer Time (21.09 GMT). It was traveling at an altitude of 37,000 feet when it vanished from radar 20 minutes before it was due to land.
Search and rescue efforts have started. According to flightradar24.com, the 12-year-old plane’s last known position was above the Mediterranean Sea. The airline has provided families of passengers with contact numbers from both inside and outside the country.
