Major disagreements are jeopardizing peace talks in Geneva. Representatives from Syria's government and opposition groups have made little headway during negotiations so far.
The biggest obstacle is still the "transition period". The Syrian government wants to take the issue off the table for the start of the talks. But rebels are insisting on a 18 month transition period and have stressed that President Bashar al-Assad must step down.
Both sides have accused each other of receiving foreign military assistance and of bringing foreign influence into Syrian domestic affairs. Another major obstacle is defining terrorist military activity. All of Syria's rebel groups deny that they are terrorists. But Damascus disagrees, and refuses to sit down and negotiate with militants that have been labeled as terrorists.
