The tension between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton may have escalated, as the two teammates -- who apparently do not get along, were involved in a wild crash. That accident on the first lap allowed youngster Max Verstappen to take the chequered flag, and maybe introduce a new start to F-1 fans.

The 18-year-old Dutchman, was racing for Toro Rosso, but was instead moved up to drive for the parent team --Red Bull, demoting Daniel Kvyat in the process.

It was a wild start at the Barcelona track. Hamilton was in pole position but was overtaken by team-mate Rosberg at the start. After another poor start, Hamilton got a good run off Turn 2 and was faster than Rosberg.

The German then moved to the inside to defend his position and squeezed the three-time world champion onto the grass. Hamilton lost control and spun, collecting Rosberg's car in the process entering Turn 4.  Both cars came to a stop in the gravel and could not continue.

The crash also ended Rosberg's chance of winning his eighth straight race. He had already won the first four in 2016 and could have become the first driver to win five in a row to start the season since Michael Schumacher with Ferrari in 2004.

Verstappen was second behind Ricciardo after the Mercedes crash, but moved to the front after a round of pit stops with less than 25 laps to go. Verstappen stayed there until the end despite a late challenge. The 18 year-old takes teh chequered flag and becomes the driver to win an F-1 race. 

"It feel amazing. I can't believe it. It was a great race. I have to say "thank you" to the team to give me such a great car to win straight away in the first race. Amazing feeling," Verstappen said.

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen was second and team-mate Sebastian Vettel third. Verstappen's team-mate, Daniel Ricciardo, still finished fourth despite suffering a plate puncture. Raikkonen is now second in the overall standings, as he Hamilton drops to third.
