Sunday marks Nakba Day, and Palestinians and Arab Israelis have participated in protests in the West Bank and Gaza in commemoration.
Nakba Day, meaning "Day of the Catastrophe" in Arabic, bears a different significance to both nations. Israelis commemorate the 68th anniversary of independence, while Palestinians mark the displacement that preceded the creation of Israel in 1948.
More than 760,000 Palestinians at that time fled or were driven from their homes. Protesters are demanding for the right to return to the land occupied by Israel.
"We demonstrate to demand our rights and the return to our occupied lands. The Nakba took place 68 years ago and we're still suffering from the siege and occupation," said Nabila Masood, protester.
"Return back to our homeland till now was a dream. Now we are trying our best to make this dream as a reality. We don't want the Nakba memories to be just a celebration," said protester Munther Ameera.
