Many of those who prefer to get their kicks indoors are spending time at the latest leg of the China DanceSport Open. Two of the nation's top couples would go head to head in the professional standard category, and while Shen Hong and Liang Yujie took the title, Chen Long and Wang Xujing have their sights set on topping the podium in the near future.
As the China DanceSport Open twirls into Shanghai, the competition at Luwan Stadium is an unforgettable experience for audience members who enjoy the graceful gambols and scintillating spins offered up by the participants -- and the organizers believe the crowds will only get bigger in the years to come.
"DanceSport is a fashionable and beautiful activity. It is full of enthusiam and it is elegant. Both the old and the young can attend these events, so we hope more and more people can experience the charm of this sport, and participate in these events," said Jiang Chao, dancesport promoter.
And among the ranks of the young taking up DanceSport and eventually becoming professional competitors are Shanghai natives Chen Long and Wang Xujing. These two have been partners for nine years, and participated in many events have won many title during that period.
But their intense training sessions can exact a heavy toll, as Wang suffered a neck injury while practicing in Denmark in 2014. While she did not miss any significant time, doctors advised her to pay close attention to that part of her body, and Chen often performs massages to relieve the recurring pain -- so they can get back to pursing their goals.
"You should set a target for yourself before the event, which is to seize the title, because it is a competition, not a performance. You should eagerly chase the championship, but when the event is over, that result is not important. You must start from the beginning again," said Wang Xujing, professional standard dancer.
But despite earning numerous honors on the floor, the one prize Chen and Wang lack is a championship. They have placed as high as sixth on the international circuit, and claimed many silver and bronze medals domestically, but they feel confident their hard work will soon be rewarded.
