The Lebanese group Hezbollah says its top military commander Mustafa Badreddine died as a result of artillery shelling near Syria's Damascus airport. Hezbollah said extremist Sunni Islamist groups in the area were behind the shelling. Hezbollah announced Badreddine's death on Friday and held a military funeral for him in southern Beirut.
A Hezbollah member of parliament was quoted as saying that Israel had been involved in the killing of Badreddine and that there would be a response "at the appropriate time".
