The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics organizing committee has now established an official office, and in the interests of following the nation's goal of staging an environmentally friendly and green Games, an old steel factory in the western suburbs of the capital is being re-used as the location.
The factory is owned by the Shougang Group, one of China's largest steel manufacturers. It was ordered to suspend most of its production ahead of the 2008 Summer Olympics in order to ease pollution during the Games. Later, the operations were moved out of the capital, leaving its large industrial area unused until now.
