Israel is marking its annual Holocaust memorial day, in remembrance of six million Jews killed by Nazi Germany during World War Two.

The 24 hours of commemorations began on Wednesday night. The official ceremony took place at Jerusalem's Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Museum. Six Holocaust survivors, each representing one of the six million Jews killed, lighted six torches.

Hundreds of people, including the President and Prime Minister, attended the event. The leaders spoke about anti-Semitism in Europe and the rest of the world. Throughout the national remembrance day, television stations devote their broadcasts to documentaries and interviews with survivors, and radio stations play sombre music.
