An Israeli man, convicted of murdering a Palestinian teenager in Jerusalem -- a crime that many say triggered the 2014 Gaza War -- has been sentenced to life in prison. In Israel, a life sentence usually means around 25 years, the murderer will be serving an additional 20 years consecutively for other counts. The Palestinian victim was bludgeoned, strangled and burned alive.
Life plus twenty years. That was the sentencing handed down in Jerusalem on Tuesday to an Israeli man convicted in the kidnapping and brutal murder of a Palestinian teenager nearly two years ago.
In July 2014, Joseph Ben David, along with two teenage accomplices, nabbed sixteen year old Mohammed Abu Khdeir off the streets of East Jerusalem, beat him and burned him alive.
The abduction and killing was reportedly in retaliation for the abductions and killings of three Israeli teenagers at the hands of Palestinians weeks prior
Mohammed Abu Khdeir's murder sparked a wave of violence throughout Jerusalem.
For Ben David this was not an isolated incident. He reportedly torched Palestinian cars in Jerusalem and the day prior to nabbing Abu Khdeir, attempted to nab a 7-year-old
Throughout the sentencing and conviction, the judge noted that the thirty year old had not expressed any remorse over his actions
At Tuesday's sentencing Ben-David issued a public statement of apology to the Abu Khdeir family saying he regretted what he had done and his actions were out of his control"
