To Zimbabwe, and the Chinese embassy there has formed a consular protection network, which it hopes will help Chinese nationals working and staying in Zimbabwe.
The network will reach out through its "liaison associates" in seven cities around the country, who will serve as information gatherers, contractors and emergency responders. It is estimated that about ten thousand Chinese nationals live and work in southern Africa country, with about one hundred Chinese-funded enterprises.
"The network we've formed this time covers seven main cities in Zimbabwe, where Chinese nationals choose to concentrate to work and stay. We've chosen 13 people upon recommendations from the overseas Chinese societies as liaison associates for consular protection along with the embassy,"
"The aim of this network is to provide timely and effective consular protection to Chinese nationals and their lawful rights," said Huang Ping, China's Ambassador to Zimbabwe.
"Practically this network will facilitate timely consular protection for Chinese nationals; it also passes on information quickly. The network is a psychological pillar which comforts Chinese nationals when they encounter difficulties,"
"They'll know where to turn for help and who to turn to for assistance. So we believe the network has significant practicality," said Li Xinfeng, Chair of Zimbabwe Chinese Business Association.
