The northern Chinese city of Tangshan has kicked off its international garden expo. Known more for its heavy industry than it is for its parklife, Tangshan lies at the center of one of China's most polluted regions. We went to Tangshan to learn more about its plan to promote an environmentally friendly city.

Inside the venue, there are some fancy ways to show visitors what a low carbon life-style should be like. This is a game about recycling.

"I think it is quite enlightening. I was never sure about what could be recycled and what could not be," said Zhang Hairu, a tourist.

There is also this tree of trash. It shows how long it takes certain things to degrade.

Tangshan is a resource-based city. The shape of this venue shows that the city's major resource is coal. The venue's floors are made of slag and the walls by recycled paper.

"The concept of design is based on thrift and clean. The exhibition itself and the visitor's experience is our focus. Also it is in the center of the city, its sustainable use is also important," said Xu Congyi, from Beijing Institute of Architectural Design.

Tangshan is a city famous for its Iron & Steel and mining industries, but it's also troubled by its pollution. This is what the city is trying to change. By holding this garden expo, it is hoping to promote green technology and the common person's love of nature.
