In November 2014, China and Japan reached an agreement to improve their bilateral ties, and their relationship has been showing signs of improvement.

However, China asserts that Japan is frequently interfering in the South China Sea issue. For instance, earlier this month, as host of a G7 foreign ministers’ meeting, Japan voiced its concerns over the East China Sea and South China Sea issues.

Tokyo did not specifically point its finger at China, but the statement from the ministers said they “express their strong opposition to any intimidating, coercive or provocative unilateral actions that could alter the status quo and increase tension.”

Beijing was so dissatisfied with the statement, its foreign ministry summoned the Japanese ambassador, as well as those from the other G7 nations.
