The football game took a backseat this week when the verdict of the Hillsborough inquest was delivered Wednesday. A court ruled 96 Liverpool fans were unlawfully killed before an F.A. cup semi-final match against Nottingham Forrest in 1989 after a 27-year search for justice. Ahead of their Europa League semi-final first leg in Villareal, Reds fans were in full voice to celebrate the decision. 

The Spanish fans singing loudly with the visitors who were relieved to officially hear their supporters did not contribute to the 96 deaths.

Criminal proceedings could now open on South Yorkshire Police after the jury found their irresponsible actions led to the mass over-crowding of the Leppings Lane end allocated for Liverpool fans. 

A verdict of accidental death was issued in 1991 but new documents came to light in 2009 which led to the inquest this year and now fans want accountability for the lives lost.
