South Korean technology giant Samsung Electronics has posted nearly 12 percent growth in its first-quarter operating profit, thanks to robust sales of its Galaxy S7 smartphones.

Its operating profit reached nearly 6 billion US dollars in the January-March period. It was a surprise by sharply surpassing market expectations.

The positive result came as the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge smartphones were released earlier than forecast, resulting in profit growth in the smartphone division.
