Japan's new security law has been facing protests from people from all walks of life. There have been continuous demonstrations across the country since last summer. On August 30th, around 120,000 people gathered in front of the Japanese parliament. It's estimated that more than one million people were involved in other protests across the country at the same time.

On the night the law took effect, about 40,000 people demonstrated in front of the parliament once again, calling for the Abe administration to abandon the law. Japanese mainstream media also criticized the law and urged the government to scrap it. Meanwhile, many Japanese politicians questioned its legitimacy and warned the government of the potential dangers that lay ahead.

"I think Abe wants to fundamentally change Japan's pacifistic nature that has lasted for nearly 70 years. Japan has not been able to resort to military forces overseas, but Abe wants to change the situation. This will increase the chances of Japan getting involved in an overseas war," said Former Chief Cabinet Secretary Masayoshi Takemura.
