In the United Kingdom, a jury has found that the 96 soccer fans who died in the 1989 Hillsborough Stadium disaster were “unlawfully killed” because of mistakes by police.
The verdict marks the conclusion of inquests that have lasted more than two years. The original verdict of “accidental death” was overturned in 2012, and a new inquest was ordered after years of campaigning by the victims’ families.
The jury concluded that fans did not contribute to the disaster. It also found that poor police-planning “caused or contributed” to the situation that led to the crush.
