Russia and the U.S. have agreed to support the Syria peace talks in Geneva. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry have discussed the Syrian crisis over the phone.

Both countries agree to deepen cooperation on Syrian issues, and consolidate ceasefire agreements. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Lavrov has stressed the need for Syria’s “moderate opposition” to withdraw from territories controlled by Islamic State militants and the Nusra Front.

He also said that supply routes to extremists should be blocked. Lavrov and Kerry also exchanged views on other issues, including the Middle East.
