550 Japanese citizens have filed a law suit against the ruling government led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
They say the new Security Law goes against the country's constitution, and have asked for the court to stop exercising Japan's self-collective defense rights. The 550 include constitutional scholars, lawyers, and victims of nuclear bombs during second world war. Over 600 attorney agents represent the plaintiffs, who have started an organization in order to prepare for a collective strategy. Similar lawsuits are being planned in other major Japanese cities as well, including Osaka, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The controversial, newly-passed security bill gives the government more power to utilize military forces overseas, which was previously forbidden under agreements reached after World War II.
