China will strictly control total capacity of coal-fired power because demand is growing at a slower pace, said the National Energy Administration and the National Development and Reform Commission.
The agencies say China will establish a warning mechanism for the construction of coal-fired projects. Regions with excessive electricity supply and those covered by air pollution prevention programs generally will not have new projects approved.
Meanwhile, the agencies say that regions where there are supply shortages should prioritize the construction of non-fuel powered plants. The government says it will also hasten the elimination of outdated coal-fired power capacity.
