The World Wide Fund for Nature and Beijing Normal University experts have discovered fresh tiger footprints in Huang-Ni-He Natural Protection Area in northeastern China. The tracks look just like other Siberian tiger tracks that were found in the protected wildife area two years ago. Researchers say they are a strong indication that there are more big cats living in China than previously thought.

Huang Ni He Natural Protection Area is located in the northeast of China, in the province of Jilin. Last month, zoologists and researchers made an exciting discovery -- they found large Siberian tiger footprints.

"There are traces of the tiger's claws. These are the front paws, it shows that the tiger wanted to climb the tree. The cuts are very deep and goes all the way up the tree," said Zhang Xiaodong/Huang Ni He Natural Protection Area.

Researchers also found what probably was the large predator's leftover meal. They say it's the remains of a wild boar. A male Siberian tiger that lives in the region was caught on an infra-red camera in 2015 before it disappeared into the darkness.

"This was captured in the town of San-cha-zi. The tiger preyed on a bull.  It also killed some cattle and ate the remains. That was back in November, the weather was cold but you can see the tiger's breath and the heat from its body," Zhang said.

According to field monitoring data, at least two or more male Siberian tigers have appeared inside Huang-Ni-He's Natural Protection Area  between 2014 and 2016. Scientists are confident the tigers travelled there because of the area has a good habitat for sustaining wildlife. With the number of wild tigers on the rise, local authorities have boosted security measures. Local police say they have set up safety nets, tightened security patrols and installed 120 infra-red cameras to better monitor wildlife activities.
