Full coverage: World Book and Copyright Day
Today marks World Book Day, also known as the World Book and Copyright Day. The yearly event has been organized since 1995 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. It aims to encourage everyone, particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading.
A recent UNESCO survey released data on global reading habits, and the results were not so encouraging for Chinese people as it found that Chinese read less than 5 books per year on average. The number is 11 in South Korea, 8.5 in Japan and 7 in the US.
Another national survey shows cell phones have become the favored way to read in China. Over 60 percent of adults read digitally in 2015. It's a 5.9 percentage increase from the previous year.
