Asian supermarkets in the United States were once confined to small stores in local Chinatowns. But now they've gone mainstream and are offering a massive selection of goods from all over Asia. One of the leading Asian grocery chains is the Good Fortune Supermarket.

The Good Fortune Supermarket in New York City looks like a regular American supermarket. But its products are far from ordinary. There's this dragon fruit that is very popular in Southeast Asia.
There is also durian-notorious for its pungent smell.

What makes Good Fortune stand out is its wide selection of Asian goods, including this dehydrated fungus. But it also carries a large selection of American goods like you see behind me, including Kosher items to cater to the Jewish community in the neighborhood.

John Brienza is one of those neighborhood customers. Overall, 30 percent of Good Fortune's customers are non-Asian.

"I come in for the fish. The fish is fresh. I come in for the produce. The produce is fresh and if you're looking for any Asian sauces - Korean sauces - they have it here," Brienza said.

This hybrid seems to be working. Good Fortune currently has 9 stores across the United States and is about to open two more in California.

Part of its success relies on demographics. Asians are the fastest growing immigrant group in America. When they come to the United States, they often want a taste of back home.

Manager Xiao Yang says Good Fortune stands out from the other Asian grocery stores.

"We like to get high quality stuff. We also like to make our stores very clean. We like to make our food clean. So I think in terms of management we are a lot tougher on these sorts of things than other supermarkets," Yang said.

It's also tough to find a supermarket in the United States that carries such a variety of Asian delicacies ranging from fish balls to live frogs.
