The Chinese national men’s team coach is trying to help grow the sport nationwide. Gao Hongbo was on hand for the second annual youth five-a-side tournament being held in Beijing.

The football manager was on hand for the opening ceremony, and was joined by Olympic taekwondo champ Luo Wei and fencing world champ Wang Ha’bin. The guests formed a team to compete with the kids in an exhibition match.

Gao has been known to attend amateur tournaments in the past, and believes events like this are crucial for developing the sport in this country.

“Football is a big system. Interest in the game should be cultivated among kids, youth training, and coach team building,” Gao said. “We should work in all aspects to build a complete structure. We expect Chinese football to develop rapidly in the next five or eight years.”
