A delegation from Taiwan arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for talks, amid rows with China's mainland on recent telecom scam cases. China's Ministry of Public Security says the delegation consisting senior Taiwanese juditial officials is here to discuss cross-Strait cooperation on the fight against telecom fraud.
In the past two weeks, Kenya authorities has deported 122 Chinese suspects to China, including 45 from Taiwan. The Kenya police says they are suspected of swindling over 6 million RMB from tens of citizens from China's mainland. Taiwan authorities argued that those from Taiwan should have been sent back to the island for trials, but only a few days later, in a separate telecom fraud case linked to China, they freed 20 Taiwanese suspects immediately after they were deported to the island from Malaysia. This move angered Chinese authorities, since most victims of the scams are from the mainland.
The State Council Taiwan Affair Office says every year there are billions of RMB swindled from the mainland to Taiwan through telecom scams, but few can be retrieved.
