Unconfirmed media reports say as many as 400 people may have died after their boats capsized near the Egyptian coast, attempting to reach Europe on Monday.

The news comes on the first anniversary of the worst migrant disaster of 2015.  At that time, up to 800 migrants drowned in the waters between Libya and Lampedusa.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella has called on Europe to reflect in the face of "yet another" migrant tragedy.

Somalia's president, prime minister and speaker of parliament have issued a joint condolence to the nation over the unconfirmed tragedy.

Italian coast guards say they have no information about a shipwreck, but they did find six bodies, and rescued 108 migrants from a semi-submerged rubber dinghy on Sunday. The Italian government says it is verifying the report.
