The top stars in world sports were honoured at the annual Laureus World Sports Awards. This year, the most dominant athletes came from the world of tennis, and the top players on both the men's and women's side were recognized for their amazing sporting years.

In a glitzy ceremony, tennis world number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia, who reached the singles finals of all four Grand Slam events and won three in 2015, was named as the Sportsman of the Year for the second time in a row, and the third overall -- and wore tennis shoes with his tuxedo. He received the award from F-1 driver Nico Rosberg.

Serena Williams, who was unable to attend the event, was named as the Sportswoman of the Year for a third time. She won the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. The American previously won the award in 2003 and 2010.

2015 Masters and US Open champion Jordan Spieth, also absent from the event, was named as the winner of the Breakthrough of the Year award.

New Zealand's All Blacks were named as the Team of the Year after winning the Rugby World Cup in England last October, captain Richie McCaw receiving the award. Their fly-half Dan Carter then scooped the Comeback of the Year award.

Dutch footballer and coach Johan Cruyff, who died of cancer in March, was posthumously named the Spirit of Sport award winner. His son Jordi received the honor.
