Voting is underway in Brazil’s lower house of Congress, to decide whether President Dilma Rousseff should face an impeachment trial.
There are a total number of 513 congressmen. And a two third vote in favor is required for the impeachment vote to go to the senate. That equals 342 votes.
The process started Sunday afternoon local time, with legislators making their choice one by one. And each is given time to speak before casting their vote, to the sound of both cheers and boos. This underscores the deep polarization in Latin America’s largest nation.
The whole session was the culmination of months of fighting, which have largely paralyzed the government and divided the country.
