The week from April 15th to April 21st is China's national week for the prevention and treatment of tumors. A 2015 report says cancer is China's number one cause of death. Out of every four people who die of cancer globally, one is Chinese... For more on this, we are joined in the studio by CCTV's Jin Yingqiao.
Q1, Yingqiao, tell us more about just how serious the situation is.
A1, It is a very alarming situation. Every year, there are over 3 million new cancer cases in China, and 2.7 million die of cancer. Every minute, 6 people are diagnosed with cancer, and 5 die of the disease. In the ten years between 2000 and 2011, the incidence of cancer for males has been steady, but for females there has been a notable growth of over 20 percent every year.Top five types in terms of incidence.
Number one: lung cancer, followed by four relating to the digestive system: gastric, colorectal, liver and esophageal cancers. Now these top five types together account for two-thirds of all Chinese cancer cases. Experts say the four digestive cancer types have been steady in their incidence. But there's a noticeable growth in colorectal cancer and that's linked with a certain group of people. Let's find out more.
Q2, So tell us what research shows about what people can do to prevent and fight cancer.
A2, About 60 percent of cancer deaths could be prevented by controlling the cancer-inducing factors. Studies suggest obesity is related to breast and prostatic cancers. Staying up late will cause disorders in your biological clock, harming your immune system, and could open doors to leukemia, breast cancer and prostatic cancer.
Compared with those who work out often, those who lead a sedentary lifestyle have a higher incidence for colon cancer of 40 to 50 percent. Long-term stress and being on alert are strong factors leading to breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Smoking and air pollution are the main inducers of lung cancer.
The mortality rate of lung cancer has increased by 4 times as much in the past 30 years, making it the highest fateful cancer. 90 percent of cancers can be traced back to lifestyle and environmental factors, only 10 to 30 percent are a result of genetic mutation.
The incidence of colorectal cancer is growing rapidly, especially among white-collar workers in the mega-cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. And it's appearing in younger people.
Some predict that colorectal cancer could become the most common of all cancer types.
The reason?
"One, it's related to your dietary structure now people all eat food of high fat, high protein and high calorie. Two, people exercise less, a lot of obese people, sitting too long. Every day people look at their phones, computers and also office work. There's high incidence of the disease among these groups of people," said Shen Lin, vice president og Beijing University Cancer Hospital.
Another kind: thyroid cancer. Its incidence has grown five times in ten years, becoming the fastest growing cancer among women.
70 percent to 80 percent of thyroid cancer patients are women, as the disease is highly related to oestrogen.
Radiation, obesity, and the wrong intake of iodine are factors that contribute to the disease.
"During puberty, gestation, and menopause, there's a relatively higher incidence among women. Those who are easy to anger, suffer long-term insomnia, long-term depression, bad moods, endocrine disorders, they could soon develop diseases related to thyroid," said Zhang Xiaoguang, doctor of Huaxi Thyropathy Research Institute.
Doctors suggest inspection of the thyroid every year for adults and every half a year for those exposed to radiative environments or have a family history of the disease. 95 percent of thyroid cancers can now be cured.
In the treatment of cancer a new term has now emerged: "dialogue treatment" stressing the need for communication and encouragement.
Huang Xian was diagnosed with ovarian cancer three years ago...Though doctors said she had only half a year to live, she's now conquered it and is providing psychological counseling to cancer patients in this hospital.
"Very happy. We share experience of fighting cancer and of eating and exercising. Together, we are not afraid."
"Cancer is not fearsome. What's fearsome is that doctors and family members don't give him hope. 80 percent of cancer patients die because of fear and worry. We have ignored the health of the heart. So I think tumor treatment must use the 'dialogue therapy'," said Wang Zhenguo, Rainbow Ribbon Love Campaign.
