The Global Infrastructure Forum in Washington has brought together for the first time the heads of all the multilateral development banks and their global development partners. Leaders pledged to cooperate more with each other in promoting global infrastructure investment and implementation.

"Today's global infrastructure forum together with all international and multi-national development bank heads provides a crucial opportunity to take the first steps towards realising our shared commitments," said UN secretary-general Ban Ki-Moon.

The forum was established by nine MDBs including the World Bank Group, African Development Bank, Asian Development Bank and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, as well as representatives of the G20, G24, and G77 organisations.World Bank reports show that over 600 million people worldwide still don't have access to safe drinking water.

Internet access is not available for around 60 percent of the world's population. As the host of this year's G20 meeting, China's finance minister Lou Jiwei said the organisation's members have agreed to encourage MDBs invest more in infrastructure. He also introduced China aims of bringing safe drinking water to all rural residents within two years, and providing internet coverage to all rural villages in the next three years.
