Search and rescue operations are underway in Kyushu Island in southern Japan, which was struck by a powerful quake on Thursday. Rescuers in Mashiki town have pulled alive from the rubble an unharmed eight-month old baby girl. Hundreds of evacuees spent the night in the townhall.

At least nine people were killed and over 860 injured. More than 45,000 people were evacuated after the first tremor hit Mashiki at 9:30 pm local time. Since then, over 130 aftershocks have been felt.

Though no tsunami warnings have been issued. There are still fears of an accident similar to what happened in 2011, when the Fukushima nuclear plants were damaged by a powerful quake followed by tsunami.
