For the first time, the incredible music, drama and grandeur of The Lion King is set to come to life in a Chinese-language live production—exclusively at Walt Disney Grand Theatre in Disneytown, Shanghai.

It may be a work in progress, but the performances by the new cast and crew impressed many. The new production promises to bring the excitement and artistry of the smash Broadway production to Chinese viewers in their native language. Those involved behind the scenes have already been swept away by the show’s magic.

"It's wonderful to see...how both cultures learning from each other and embracing each other," said an audience member.

The major point of departure for this new production is the show’s language.

Since its Broadway premiere in 1997, more than 80 million people around the world have seen 23 global productions in 8 languages. This will be the 24th production and the first performing in Chinese language. This presents a challenge for foreign performers as well as Chinese performers.

"This is the first time that I have to combine singing and dancing and performing all together. It's a whole new kind of experience and it's a very challenging one too. I'm glad we can learn from some of the best," said Li Weiling, actress.

The Lion King remains the highest-grossing Broadway show in New York history, as well as one of the most popular stage musicals in the world. The Broadway classic will be performed for the first time in Chinese at Shanghai Disney Resort on June 16th.
