Austria has started building a border control station at the main crossing to Italy. The move is to block migrants who will likely use that route to enter Europe.
Workers are clearing a highway part on the Brenner Pass to construct a registration hall, barriers, and other structures. Vienna said tougher border controls will begin from June 1st. It has built a same system at its borders with Slovenia and Hungary. The EU said it is very concerned at Vienna's action, and said the Brenner Pass is essential for freedom of movement within the bloc. Italy slammed Vienna, and has asked the EU to verify if the move would violate Europe's Schengen agreement.
