As the G7 meeting got underway in Hiroshima, a group of protesters gathered to demonstrate against the talks.  Dozens walked past the city's landmark site, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, commonly known as the atomic bomb dome. A large number of police officers, some in riot gear, were deployed to accompany the protest. Many of those demonstrating said they were angry against Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's administration for its stance on nuclear issues. They also voiced concern about the controversial security law which took effect last month.

The legislation loosens the limits of Japan's pacifist constitution on its military, and allows Japanese troops to fight overseas for the first time since World War Two. The law was passed despite surveys showing the public remained divided over a change. Protesters at the demonstration also cast doubts that the G7 can help in nuclear disarmament.
