Yang Tian -- a certified inheritor of Dong embroidery -- started to learn the craft when she was eight years old. The exquisite handicraft was a must for Dong girls back then. In an attempt to revitalize the tradition, Yang and her fellow villagers established a study center, to pass the art of Dong embroidery to young girls.
Dong embroidery was added to Guangxi’s regional intangible cultural heritage list in 2009. A year earlier, 270 embroidery pieces were presented to delegations at the China-ASEAN Expo in Nanning, the regional capital, representing the province's ethnic heritage.
