Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi says G7 foreign ministers should not stoke regional tensions on the South China Sea issue. Wang made the remarks after he met with visiting German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Friday.

"I hope the G7 can play a positive role like the G20, and focus its agenda on economic development. If some countries want to bring up historical conflicts or specific territorial disputes during the G7 meetings, that would not help resolve the problem,"

"It would harm regional stability, which is surely not appropriate," said Wang.

Wang Yi also sent a similar message to the UK. He told visiting British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond that China hopes Britain will adopt an objective and fair stance on the issue, and not take sides.
