An explosion and massive fire sparked by fireworks have killed over 100 people and left more than 280 others injured at a Hindu temple in southern India's Kollam district.
The fireworks exploded around 3:30 am local time, while crowds were watching an illegal fireworks display to celebrate a local new year festival. Those injured have been admitted to various local hospitals in Kerala state and other nearby districts. Makeshift air-conditioned camps have also been set up.
Local officials say the death toll may go up as some are said to be in a critical condition. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was flying to the scene and arranging immediate transport of the critically injured via helicopter.
