Action from the China Swimming Championships in Foshan. World Champion Ning Zetao was scheduled to compete in the 100-meter freestyle final, but the swimmer would withdraw due to an illness.
World champ Ning withdraws from National Championships
A shocking turn of events, especially after his impressive form in the semi-finals when he clocked in a 47-point-96 seconds, the second best time of the year. His withdrawal from the competition, which doubles as an Olympic qualifier, will not affect his participation, as he has already qualified to swim in Brazil.
Beijiing's Shi Tengfei would take Ning's spot in the final, but the person who benefitted most was Guangdong's Yu Hexin, as he was able to get off to a quick start, and was able to grab the early lead, and touch the wall first after 50 meters.
He would be able to hold onto the lead and is able to win it in 48-point-47 seconds, which is good enough to earn himself a spot at the Rio Games.
The National Swimming championships run until Sunday.
